Can I Still Drink Alcohol?

People love going out for a few beers or glasses of wine. It’s kinda part of life for many people. So let’s see what we can do here. Alcohol is tough because it slows down fat burning.

Just a side note - you can get drunk really quickly when you don’t eat many carbohydrates. Considering your body is burning fat for energy as your liver’s glycogen stores are low, your liver can get right to the metabolization of the alcohol - which is what makes you feel drunk. So keep that in mind if you’re having a few drinks.

Alcohol should not be used during the first two weeks of this new way of eating. We really need to get your body to forget about utilizing carbohydrates for energy. If you’re drinking alcohol during this important time, you’re not giving your body enough chance to break it’s old habit.

If you can - try to wait until you’re four weeks in. If you can’t, start very slow and check your ketone levels with Keto Sticks. You can get these in most pharmacies as diabetics use them. You want at least SOME color on those Keto Sticks. If you drink alcohol and it goes back to white - you’re out of ketosis. Get back on board and keep checking once or twice each day.

Eventually you’ll get back into ketosis. If you gave your body enough time to forget about burning carbohydrates for energy, you should be back very quickly - the same day in most cases. If not, it could take a little more time. Just keep an eye on things.

In any event, clear liquor that’s about 40% alcohol are generally safe and considered “keto”. Some examples are Whiskey, Vodka, Cognac, Brandy, Tequila, Gin and Rum. If wine is your thing, you’ll want to stick to the dry or semi-dry types - never sweet. There are 3-4 grams of carbohydrates in a five ounce glass of dry Merlots, Pinot Noirs and Cabernet Sauvignons. Some good whites would be Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Grigio and Chardonnay - also at 3-4 carbohydrates per five ounce glass.

There’s a whole slew of light beers you can try. Bud Select has less than 2 carbohydrates per 12oz serving. Michelob Ultra has 2.6. Miller Lite has 3.2... There are a lot to choose from. But you don’t need to avoid going out with friends to have a drink or two. If you really want to get drunk, perhaps drink on an empty stomach. But keep in mind that being drunk may cause you to make bad food decisions...

The same rule applies to drinking too much as eating too much - either way you’re kind of cheating. Again, I scale back on the carbs and do induction (20 carbs or less) for a day or two and I’m right back in the swing of things. If I gained anything in that time it’s normally water weight and easy enough to lose.
